Figurative language enhances prose by giving the reader more vivid mental images. It's one thing to say "His face was red," but you get a much clearer picture by saying "His face turned the color of a ripe tomato." Figurative language is a much better way of creating a picture in your reader's mind. It's also going to leave a more lasting impression.
