What waves can be used for communication?

Any wave can be used for communication. This is because waves (of any kind) can be made to form patterns, and those patterns can be defined to mean certain things.

The most common wave used for communication is the sound wave (or more accurately, a pressure wave through the air). Radiowaves and other electromagnetic waves are also commonly used, as they can cover long distances extremely quickly and don't have as much interference.
