The chain is a double row operating on toothed gears and tensioned by an hydraulic tensioner. Wear is minimal provided oil quility is maintained. Unlike toothed belts which have a service interval of 80-100,000kms (50-60,000 miles) changing is not normally required. Timing chanin rattle on cold start up after long periods is not unusual even on low mileage engines.
