Why was Joseph Stalin in exile?

2 reasons I can think of - 1) Stalin was paranoid and did some of it to consolidate his power

2) Some of it was also to force Russia into a Modern Communist economy. For example, he purged the Kulaks (wealthy peasants) so that the government could take control of the peasants and collectivize their farms.
