Why was the SR 71 retired?

The primary reason was the cost of keeping the planes operational. Reconnaissance satellites, while expensive to launch, are less expensive to operate. By 1998, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) like the Predator were demonstrating that similar missions could be accomplished at much lower cost and without putting crews at risk.
