In which year was the American Constitution adopted?

The U.S. Constitution was adopted on September 17, 1787, 11 years after the United States declared it's independence from Great Britain. It was ratified by conventions in eleven states and it went into effect on March 4, 1789. The Constitution is the supreme law of the U.S. which guides American law as well as political culture.
