Green thumbs represents an aptitude for gardening, thought to of US/Canadian origin in the early 1940's. The English equivalent of 'green fingers' appears in the 1930's. It is suggested that the expression is related to farmers using their fingers or thumbs to remove flowers from plants, particularly tobacco, to increase the size of the leaf. This explanation would make the origin of expression somewhat earlier than was first thought
