During a vasectomy, the vas deferens (tubes that carry sperm from the testicles to the urethra) are cut, tied, or sealed. This prevents sperm from being released during ejaculation, leading to sterility. However, it may take several months and ejaculations to clear any remaining sperm from the reproductive system before the man is considered sterile.
