Furthermore, Gatsby claims to have gone to Oxford, but it is later revealed that in attended the college for a short time after the Great War. Gatsby's past is, quite literally, an enigma wrapped in a paradox and the reader is only given a few clues as to what events have occured in Gatsby's past which have led him to the events in the novel.

During the events of the novel, Gatsby lives in West Egg, an area across the bay from an area associated with New Money and gaudiness.
