During the early colonial days of Colorado, Spanish explorers first ventured into the region in the late 16th century, but it remained largely uncolonized until the mid-19th century. The area saw an influx of settlers following the 1858 discovery of gold in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, leading to the establishment of mining camps and towns. The influx of miners and settlers intensified tensions with Native American tribes, resulting in conflicts over land and resources. Colorado officially became a U.S. territory in 1861 and later achieved statehood in 1876.
