One answer

Matthew's Gospel says that the wise men followed a star to Bethlehem, although the author of Luke's Gospel seems unaware that there had been such a star. Ian Wilson, in Jesus: The Evidence, page 48 says, "The hard reality is that neither the Matthew nor the Luke nativity stories offers sufficient historicity (and the story of the wise men and the star appears only in Matthew) for anyone to be confident that there was a star at all."

Another answer

Read Matthew 2 ... They followed the star of Jesus Christ.

2 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,

2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

ANOTHER ANSWER:

The "wise men" followed JESUS' ANGEL.

"This is THE MEANING of the seven STARS... The seven STARS ARE THE ANGELS of the seven churches..." (Rev.1:20 NLT)

"...We have seen HIS STAR as it arose..." (Matt.2:2 NLT New Living Translation]

"This is the revelation FROM JESUS CHRIST, which God [the Father] gave Him concerning events that will happen soon. AN ANGEL WAS SENT to God's servant John so that he could SHARE the revelation with God's other servants."

"...He will SEND HIS ANGEL BEFORE YOU..." (Gen.24:7 NLT)

God SENT AN ANGEL [a STAR] before the wise men to guide them to Christ.

"...they departed; and, lo, THE STAR [ANGEL], which they saw in the east, WENT BEFORE THEM [it was MOBILE -- it MOVED], UNTIL IT CAME and STOOD over where the "young child" was [not a BABE in a manger, but]... they were come INTO THE HOUSE..." (Matt.2:9-11 KJV).
