The BC (Before Christ) and AD (Anno Domini, Latin for "in the year of our Lord") calendar system was developed in the 6th century by the monk Dionysius Exiguus. He created it to calculate the date of Easter, establishing the year 1 AD as the birth year of Jesus Christ. This system gradually gained acceptance in Western Europe and became widely used in the centuries that followed.
