How fast must a bug swim to keep up with the waves it is producing?

Because the bug is producing the wave then it must be travelling at the same speed. This wave will be directly in front of the bug and not at its sides where the waves slow down.

So long as the boat it moving forward it will produce a bow wave however small or large, just the same as our bug.
