How do Odysseus and his men sneak out of the cyclops ' cave?

Odysseus ties three of the rams together and puts him men under them and he gets under the biggest. They stay under them all night then in the morning when Polyphemus lets the rams out to graze they escape cause he only pet the top of the rams to make sure none of the men got out that way. But he does not check the bottom of the rams
