Hearing is a very complex sense. In fact, it utilizes the most complex system of mechanical, physical and neurological processes of all the sensory organs. Because of this, the way it delivers a signal through a damaged system (one with hearing loss) is also complex.

Each new computer chip that a hearing aid manufacturer creates can cost well over one hundred million dollars or more. In fact, hearing aids are some of the most advanced computers, with some of the fastest processing ability, available anywhere.

Also, consider that when you purchase hearing aids, they usually include years of service, repair and adjustments. Every time you go in for a repair or adjustment, the cost of that service is included. Instead of charging you $100 or more each visit, most professionals "bundle" the cost of seeing you (for up to five years or more) in with the device.

There are hearing aids in all price ranges. You can get the cheapest hearing aids possible, or you can get the finest sound reproduction possible. If you have been to someone who recommends a device you cannot afford, ask them to show you some more economical options. The technology may not be as advanced, or it may be a few years older, but it will still help you to hear better. Don't cheat yourself when it comes to hearing aid quality, but no matter what you can afford, there are quality hearing aids out there for you.
