How DO you build a log cabin by hand?

You cut logs of the same length for the front and back walls, and for the two side walls. You notch these logs, top and bottom, at both ends, cutting a square "notch' several inches wide all the way across, and several inches deep at the deepest part. When you stack the logs you fit these notches together so they lock the logs in place. If you are really alone you might have to use two or three smaller poles as ramps to slide the heavy top logs up into position. You cut a doorway in after you have the logs stacked, and connect the ends of the logs there with a half of a split log to make the door facings. You chink the spaces between the logs with mud. You need a hearthstone inside and a chimney. Rock is best but you could make a chimney from sticks and mud. For a roof you put up poles so they peak at the middle, and then poles running across. The best roof would be shake-shingles, but you need a froe to rive these from a log. These are flat pieces of wood three or four inches wide and eight or ten inches long, maybe a quarter of an inch thick, split away from a log.
