Believe it or not, obtaining a social security card for your little one is going to be easier than obtaining a birth certificate. Depending on the state, obtaining a birth certificate could be as easy as ordering a copy and checking a box on a form in the hospital. Or you may have to wait five to six weeks before going to the vital records department in your county to obtain a copy. Some counties also have different procedures for obtaining birth certificates. Within the first year of life, a birth certificate can be obtained from one location or from a different location once your child is one year of age. Check online or call your county’s vital records department to find out the procedure in your county.

To obtain your child’s social security card simply wait. The hospital will make you fill out a form with all the particulars – father’s name, mother’s name, etc. The hospital will then forward that form to the Social Security office and they will mail out the card to your mailing address indicated on the form in four to six weeks. Imagine, no taking a number or long waits at the Social Security office. Isn’t that a relief?
