Were slaves paid

If you are talking about US slaves, it depended on the owner.

Most slaves did NOT receive money. They were given shacks for homes, 1 set of new clothes per year, food and that was about it.

However, some owners allowed some of their slaves (especially those with specialized skills such as blacksmith, wheelwright, etc.) to hire themselves out to neighbors for pay once their own personal work for their owner was finished.
