Dump truck drivers are used in several different fields. They may be used for garbage pickup in smaller towns or camp areas. Dump truck drivers are also used in the construction field. Some individuals work independently as a dump truck driver for hire. In such a position, they are hired to haul loads of furniture, tree clippings or other items that need to be removed and dumped. Dirt and sand companies usually hire dump truck drivers to deliver loads. Companies in agricultural areas also employ dump truck drivers to haul and dump manure or fertilizer. In some situations, the dump truck driver may also be required to do manual heavy lifting, which is physically strenuous and may cause injuries.

In order to become a dump truck driver, a clean driving and criminal record are required. Since the truck must be driven on public roads, most companies who hire dump truck drivers will require a Commercial Driver's License. Private companies that operate by using only country roads or their own property may not have this requirement for short driving distances. To obtain a Commercial Driver's License, or CDL, a great deal of studying and driving practice is required. The written tests are taken at the DMV office, followed by the driving test. There are CDL guide books and practice tests available online or at the DMV. Usually a 30-day waiting period between test attempts is mandatory, so it is important to study thoroughly and know the material in order to pass on the first attempt. Many employers hire drivers on the condition that they must pass the test quickly, so if it is failed more than once, employers may retract their offer. Some companies may also provide an extra class to ensure their drivers know how to operate the dump truck properly.

Wages for dump truck drivers vary greatly. Drivers who own a dump truck and work on a contract basis may charge higher rates to absorb the cost of operating their business. Salaries are well over $60,000 per year for independent drivers, but much of that is re-invested in the business. Company-paid drivers usually earn between $35,000 and $45,000 annually.
