WHO WERE notable Texans who served in world war 2?

Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who commanded the US Pacific Fleet and also the Central Pacific Theater of Operations, was from Fredericksburg, Texas. His family ran the Nimitz Hotel there, which had the fake front of a steamboat for a facade. Some speculate this is what took a boy from dusty central Texas, miles from water, to the Naval Academy.

The 36th Infantry Division is the Texas and Oklahoma National Guard in peacetime, and was one of the US divisions to see a lot of action. They fought in southern Italy, in the breakout from Anzio, and made the "second D-Day" landings on the Riviera in August 1944, and fought on through France into Germany.
