d^(2) = (x^(2) + y^(2)

Hence for the points (-3,2)& ( 5. -1)

d^(2) = (-3-5)^(2) + (2 - - 1)^(2) (Note the double minus).

d^(2) = (-8)^(2) + (3)^(2)

d^(2) = 64 + 9

d^(2) = 73

d = sqrt(73)

d = 8.54400....
