What creates mucus?

Mucous tissues produce mucus as a lubricant, to prevent tissues from drying, to cleanse passageways if blocked and to prevent infections by the antiseptic enzymes it contains. Mucous tissues are in the respiratory system, gastrointestinal system, reproductive system and the eyeball has a similar tissue, called vitreous tissue.
