What is the value of a 1914 us cent?

Look under the date for a mint mark. Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 01/2010:

No mint mark letter:

Very worn condition - $0.35

Moderately worn - $2

Slightly worn - $5

Almost no wear - $32

Uncirculated - $45-175 depending on quality

"S" mint mark:

Very worn condition - $10

Moderately worn - $15

Slightly worn - $25

Almost no wear - $150

Uncirculated - $258-1280

"D" mint mark - a key coin in the Lincoln series:

Very worn condition - $186

Moderately worn - $354

Slightly worn - $438

Almost no wear - $1500

Uncirculated - $2,000-11,500

There are many counterfeit 1914-D cents. The most common fakes are made by scraping away part of the first '4' on a 1944-D coin. These are relatively easy to identify because the spacing of the 9 and faked '1' will be too wide; also a genuine 1914-D cent does not have the designer's initials VDB below the fold in Lincoln's coat. When in doubt, check with a certified appraiser or dealer.
