Workers should take the 40 hour courses if they are directly involved in the cleaning up of hazardous materials, its storage, or its transportation. The 40 hour course is required for the safety of workers at uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. Other, shorter courses, may be appropriate for those who are less directly involved with uncontrolled hazardous waste sites and should be selected based upon the type of work and the potential hazard involved in the work. Workers must also have 40 hrs of initial training before they may enter the site and at least three days of actual field experience under a trained, seasoned supervisor. The three days field experience under a trained, experienced supervisor is the responsibility of the student employer or potential employer.
