Why is curare not harmful when ingested?

Curare, a plant-derived compound traditionally used as a poison for arrows, primarily affects the neuromuscular junction when administered parenterally (through injection). When ingested, it is broken down by digestive enzymes and does not effectively enter the bloodstream, thus rendering it non-toxic. Additionally, its components do not have the same paralytic effects on the body when processed through the digestive system. Therefore, curare is generally considered safe when consumed orally.
