How do beats occur?

Beats occur when two sound waves of slightly different frequencies interfere with one another. As these waves combine, they alternately reinforce and cancel each other, creating a fluctuating sound amplitude. This results in a periodic rise and fall in volume, perceived as a "beating" effect. The beat frequency is equal to the difference in frequencies of the two waves.
