Why did Germany want the Middle East involved in World War 2?

Mainly in order to disrupt communications between Britain and India; also to launch an attack on India. (The Germans even printed stamps for use in India!) If The Afrika Corps defeated the British Army at El Alamein, they would have taken Egypt for Germany and would meet up with the Wehrmacht up through Palestine Turkey and Greece.
