This question is actually incorrect, and probably resulted from misquoting the title of a 1998 documentary, "The Man Who Drove With Mandela." Nelson Mandela was actually the driver, and the gay man was the one being driven. When Mandela was a fugitive fighting apartheid, he was helped by gay white director, Cecil Williams, who was also a communist. To move around unseen, Mandela pretended to be a limo driver and Williams pretended to be his boss. The black-white relationship provided the perfect camouflage since it was not unusual for wealthy white men to have a black limo driver. The two were arrested in 1952.
