I think that they work the same way as injections but I'm not sure?

As far as I understand nothing like an injection.

An antiseptic cream reduces the chance of infection from bacterial agents on the skin. It is a topical treatment, that is it is applied to the skin, and provides a barrier between the vulnerable area and the hostile environment.

Furthermore it may have a "drawing" effect, i.e. it draws out infected matter from the wound in the way that a poultice might. It stops the wound from drying up and may be needed to be used for some days to ensure that all infected material is removed before changing to a treatment that allows the wound to close and heal.

Then a lotion could be applied which will protect the area and support final healing.
