What is the purpose of a flywheel?

The purpose of the flywheel is to moderate and smooth out the energy that is delivered from the motor to the machine. It does this by storing excess kinetic energy for intermittent use. The effect is to smooth out the energy delivery so the ride (if the machine is a car) is smooth instead of jerky.
