How do you plan a cross country route?

Some ideas for beginning the planning process:

* Take a look at a big map and pick some prime spots you definitely want to see.

* Calculate more time than you think you need. Your vehicle might break down or you may decide in the middle to stop somewhere you hadn't planned for (that can happen a lot).

* Speak to people who have done it. There's a lot of great advice out there, waiting to be taken.
