Why does it seem to get darker quicker in mountainous areas than in areas with plenty of flat land?

The sun dips below the tops of the mountains, and throws shadows that make it appear that night is closing in. On flat land, the sun is above the horizon much longer, so there are no shadows and the sunlight lasts until the sun is well below the horizon.
