Whiskers allow animals to gather information on their environment even if they cannot see. One obvious benefit to whiskers is that they give immediate feedback on the size of a space relative to the size of the animal allowing the animal to determine if an openning can be navigated without getting struck.

Whiskers also act to protect an animal's head and eyes.
