a rich scholar has two wives. each wife has a daughter. the first daughter was very beautiful, the second hideous. they were of the same age. beauty's mother was murdered by her stepmother, but came back in the form of a yellow cow. the stepmother, then, abused beauty and gave her the worst tasks in the house. the cow saved her daughter by: spinning hemp fibers into threads, sorting beans from poppy seeds, and filling a pot with tears. the stepmother suspects the cow as beauty's helper and kills it. beauty collects her mother's bones, buries it in a pot and uses its magic wisely.

the newly-crowned king invites everyone to his inauguration, and is in search for a bride. pock-face and the stepmother goes, but beauty was left behind. beauty asks for a dress, a pair of shoes and a horse from her mother's bones, and follows her step-family into the inaugural feast. she is admired by everyone except her stepmother and envious sister, who recognized her among the guests. she leaves to prevent them from humiliating her and loses a shoe on a ditch. the king finds it and proclaims that its owner would be his queen pock-face tried the slipper but failed. beauty tried the slipper and was betrothed to him. the night before the wedding, pock-face killed beauty. she was transformed into a sparrow. pock-face wore a mask and presented herself as the king's bride. the sparrow began to taunt pock-face while she is lying at the king's bedside. pock-face killed the sparrow and threw its bones into the garden. the bones became a bamboo tree. the king found its shoots delectable, but it gave sores to his false wife. the false queen had the tree cut down and was made into a bed. the bed would transform into beauty every evening and would lie down beside the king, but the false queen's back was red with bruises every-time she sleeps in the bed. the bed was thrown out of the palace and was found by a woman, who discovering the magic behind it, adopted beauty as her daughter. the king saw beauty again in a festival and recognized her as his true wife. he boiled pock-face alive, and reinstated the real queen. the woman, beauty's adoptive mother became the king's mother-in-law, and the stepmother died with terror upon finishing consuming her daughter's flesh, whom the king sent to her as a gift.
