there were quite a few German generals involved in one way or another, but the "big name" German who did approve of the attempt (though he did not take part) was Erwin Rommel.

Rommel was eventually connected to the plot, and, because of his stature and exemplary record, was offered the choice of trial (which would have devastated his family) or suicide, which he elected to do.
