Why can't you see Venus at midnight?

Venus is always close to the sun, so when it can be seen, it is only just after sunset or just before sunrise. By midnight the Venus will be below the horizon, so it would not be possible to see it.

If you live closer to the poles, say Alaska for example, then you might be able to see the Sun at midnight near the summer solstice. If Venus is close to the sun and the Sun has just dropped below the horizon, then maybe you can Venus at midnight.

For example, in mid-May of 2031 if you are in Fairbanks, Alaska, Venus doesn't set! At midnight it is 16 degrees above the horizon in Gemini. Use a planetarium program to verify or try this. Go to www.heavens-above.com. Set or change your current location to Fairbanks, Alaska. Then find the link to "Whole Sky Chart". Set the time to May 16, 2031 at 23:58 p.m.
