How does the freedom of speech make peoples lives better?

It allows for the expression of ideas and change. When people are not allowed to express themselves it means that change can't take place and the exchange of ideas doesn't happen. Often in history when people have been able to express themselves in articles and in speeches changes in the society happen making everyone's lives better.
