In the 1990s, the Bosniak population, primarily Muslims, in Bosnia and Herzegovina was a significant victim of ethnic cleansing during the Bosnian War. This brutal campaign, carried out by Bosnian Serb forces, aimed to create ethnically homogeneous territories by forcibly removing or killing Bosniaks and Croats. The most notorious example of this violence was the Srebrenica massacre in 1995, where thousands of Bosniak men and boys were murdered. The conflict led to widespread atrocities and significant displacement of civilians.
