Why do people wear jewelry?

The main reasons people wear jewelry are for self-expression, status, or tradition, although these reasons can obviously overlap. Someone who wears jewelry for self-expression might wear unusual earrings or have unconventional piercings. Someone who wears jewelry for status might wear very expensive jewelry from a famous designer or made of rare gems and metals. Someone who wears jewelry for tradition might wear a wedding ring, or a family heirloom.
