Who was Saint Sophia?

The legend says that Sophia had three daughters - Faith, Hope and Charity. Sophia was told to renounce her Christianity and offer sacrifice to pagan gods or her children would be killed. She refused and her daughters were martyred, one by one, in front of her. She is said to have died of a broken heart when she visited their tomb the following day. The story is probably an allegory and may have never actually happened.
