Young lions, called cubs, are born after a gestation period of about 110 days. A lioness typically gives birth to one to four cubs in a secluded den to protect them from predators. Newborn cubs are blind and helpless, relying entirely on their mother for nourishment and care. They begin to open their eyes and become more mobile after a few weeks, eventually joining the pride as they grow.
