The New York Herald was a rival of the NY Tribune and ultimately became a newspaper with the largest national readership during the US Civil War. Its publisher was the anti-Radical James Gordon Bennett. It was an outspoken enemy of the Radical Republicans and did not care for President Lincoln either. While wanting the US Civil War rebellion to end, it also said that the ultimate goal of Federal policy was to preserve white supremacy in a restored Union.
