How is radioactivity used to locate oil deposits?

they either use one of the folowing types: gamma, beta, alpha depending on the type of place they want to search. they send out the waves and if the signal they receive changes e.g. less signal coming in to the receptor then they know that something is located there and they dig it up to check. the procedure is different in other places but it is similar.
