An artifact is something that is not natural, but is man-made. A surgical artifact, then, is something on exam that doesn't represent the person's natural body, but is something created by surgery. For instance, when looking at the x-ray of a patient who had a lumbar fusion, you'll see familiar looking screws. These are surgical artifacts. They are not screw-shaped tumors that the patient made himself.
