Why are cats and dogs your best friends?

Well actually usually they only refer to dogs as man's best friend but i guess you could say the same for cats. this is because you become so attached to these animals and almost get to know them and love them so much to the point where you see them as your best friends. I know it sounds wierd, but if you haven't had a dog, or cat, then you will have no idea what i am talking about!
