What is the police to civilian ration in the US?

From the 2002 Uniform Crime Report

The average New England PD has 2.2 Officers per 1000.

It is also broken down by population groups.

populations of 250,000 + = 3.6 per 1000

100,000-249,999 = 2.9

50,000 - 99,000 = 2.1

25,000- 49,000 = 1.8

10,000- 24,999 = 1.9

under 10,000 = 1.9

My Department is at 1 per 1000 with a population group of 10,000- 24,999

I don't know of too many departments in Massachusetts that are even close to the New England Average.

NYC is one cop per 218 ppl.

But the avg is about 1 cop per 500 ppl.
