The first exchange-traded fund (ETF) was created in 1993 by the American Stock Exchange (AMEX) in collaboration with State Street Global Advisors. This ETF, known as the S&P 500 Depository Receipt (SPDR), was designed to track the performance of the S&P 500 index. The success of SPDR paved the way for the widespread adoption of ETFs in the investment industry.
