Why did Richard and Maurice McDonald open McDonald's?

According to Mr. Franchise of Franchise Foundations, the owners of McDonalds, brothers Dick and Mac McDonald, did not franchise McDonalds. Rather, it was a multimixer salesman they met in 1954, Ray Kroc, who persuaded them to let him franchise the small hamburger stand.
