Paul Tibbets was born on February 23, 1915, in Quincy, Illinois. He grew up in a middle-class family and developed an interest in aviation at a young age, earning his pilot's license by the age of 16. Tibbets attended the University of Florida before enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1937, where he honed his flying skills and eventually became a skilled bomber pilot. His early experiences in aviation laid the groundwork for his later role as the pilot of the Enola Gay, the aircraft that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima in 1945.
