The Aztecs called chocolate xocolatl (shoh-koh-lah-till). However, what they referred to as chocolate was a warm beverage (similar to Hot Chocolate) without milk or sugar.

The Aztecs also referred to the seed pod and the unprocessed seeds as cacao (kah-cow).
